A group of 15 individuals of all ages from the Chilliwack, Abottsford, and Calgary Free Reformed Churches, Netherlands Reformed and Canadian Reformed Churches are gathering together to travel to Ecuador on March 4 to 14, 2016.
Ecuador’s often stunning scenery stands in stark contrast to the physical, emotional and spiritual landscape of many homes in Ecuador. Although urban centers are more characterized by wealth, poverty is still rampant, especially among rural, indigenous people groups. Children often live in unimaginable conditions and are at high risk for physical and sexual abuse. In some situations, one or both of their parents are in jail for drug trafficking or other crimes. In order to address the physical and spiritual needs of children in these communities.
The Mission Team will be going to Quinindé, which is a town on the coastal plain three and half hours from Quito. The majority of the men will work on our construction site on our 5 acre ‘House of Hope’ property where we hope to build over the next several years a caretaker’s home and storage shed, a recreational/educational complex, a micro industry complex where we can train the adults new ways of earning money and marketing skills along and also provide a place for theological studies. In the future we will also be building a day medical clinic to serve the underprivileged, and an abused girl’s home. This year we hope to complete the caretaker’s house, a storage shed and we hope to begin on the building that will house the micro industry projects, the mission office, seminary space and housing for visiting teams, doctors and professors once this is finished.
The ladies will be working with 225 children at the two children’s projects that we have in two marginal areas of this town. The team members will organize and provide the crafts and games for this outreach, and our Ecuadorian team will work alongside them to lead the Bible stories and singing. Some of the men may also be used for various little jobs at the projects which require electricians, plumbing, and general maintenance type work and the men who wish to work directly with the children will also have this opportunity.
Although there is undoubtedly much work to be done, there are other purposes to our trip. Through our actions and attitudes, we will have the opportunity to show the love of Christ to all who we will meet and we will deepen our relationship with God as we also see first-hand his powerful work in redeeming lives:
- We will spend time with children who may lack parental care and affection, many of whom come from dysfunctional homes.
- We will confirm to our “neighbours” in Ecuador that we recognize their needs, and love them enough to spend our time, talents and resources to come alongside them.
- We will encourage the Jonkmans, Dr. Yeny and the mission workers as they spend their lives working to build and strengthen the Kingdom of God in Ecuador.
- We will learn and to broaden your perspective of the world and missions.
Follow us on our journey as we fundraise, travel and work in and for Ecuador!
